Protection and Securing Brands
Counterfeiting and diversion threaten brands around the world, amounting to nearly half a trillion dollars a year in trade, according to a 2016 study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the European Union’s Intellectual Property Office. The United States is hit the hardest by such illegal trade, per the report, and pharmaceutical products are among those at risk. Despite such risks, many healthcare products are marketed without brand-protection strategies. To help you decide what steps you should take for your brand, we answer some of the most common questions about brand protection below.
Overt
Discernible to the average person with no tools/training and difficult to reproduce/replicate
One thing all successful brand protection strategies have in common is they employ “Layers” of protection. Anti-Counterfeit technology can be classified into 3 primary categories: Overt, Covert and Forensic. Within these 3 primary categories, package component modifications can be customized further to add additional layers of protection. Let CCL guide you through the process.

Guilloche
An intricate printing pattern with a precise design and repetitive pattern that can be authentic both via human readable and with the aid of an application.
Invisible Yellow Micro Serialization
A yellow security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.
Invisible Blue Serialization
A blue security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.
Invisible Yellow Static
A yellow security ink that respond to a certain light frequency used in a layered approach is a predefined location with in the artwork.

A yellow security ink printed as a barcode for authentication that respond to a certain light frequency.
Invisible Yellow Static Branding Mark
A yellow security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.

A yellow security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.
Invisible Blue Branding
A blue security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.
IR Micro Serialized Text
A red security ink that respond to a certain light frequency. In this particular use case the number is serialized utilizing digital print technology.
Finger Printed Barcode
Barcode technology that utilize cameras to finger print the print patterns with in the barcodes. These print patterns are registered in database and when the labels are interrogate recalled.
Taggant
A covert taggant is mixed into the regular varnish used on a label. The taggant is detected by a small hand held reader. When the correct taggant is present the reader will give a green light. Microscopic dots are mixed in a clear varnish. The dots are engraved with text or a logo and can only be viewed with a 200X or better microscope.
Serialized Micro Text
It can only be seen with magnification. A unique identification number can be assigned to individual items allowing them to be tracked and authenticated in the supply chain and by the end user.
Micro Print
Text is printed in .5 POINT type inside a bar code or border or other pattern on the label. Use magnification to see it.
DNA Presence
An artificially manufactured DNA marker is mixed into a clear varnish and printed in a specific place on a label. The presence and identity of the DNA is determined/authenticated only using forensic lab equipment.
Serialization
A unique identification number can be assigned to individual items allowing them to be tracked and authenticated in the supply chain and by the end user. Smart phones with free to the public apps can be used to read a barcode of that ID number to authenticate the item and give brand owners valuable data. It can even be used to interact with the consumer.
